Winnie the Pooh: Silly old bear? Or Wise Winnie?

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

So many people overlook Winnie the Pooh and friends as stories just for kids, but A.A. Milne really had a way with words – even more than you may realise at first.

People laugh when I say this, but I feel I’ve actually got more out of Winnie the Pooh as an adult than when I was younger, thinking Pooh was just a silly old bear, when in fact he’s quite the Wise Winnie!

Sometimes I’ll be sitting there with Winnie the Pooh on in the background (as you do, coz I’m cool like that) and one of the characters will say something that literally makes me stop in my tracks – mind blown.

How did I miss all these pearls of wisdom all this time?! Here are a few of my favourite A. A. Milne quotes:

"You’re braver than you believe and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think."

"I always get where I’m going by walking away from where I’ve been."

"The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually."

"Don’t underestimate the value of doing nothing, of just going along listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering."

"The things that make me different are the things that make me."

"We didn’t realise we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun."

"Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them."

"Could be worse. Not sure how, but it could be."

"They’re funny things accidents. You never have them until you have them."

"Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day."

“Rabbit’s clever”, said Pooh thoughtfully.

“Yes”, said Piglet. “Rabbit’s clever”.

“And he has a brain”

“Yes”, said Piglet. “Rabbit has a brain”

There was a long silence.

“I suppose”, said Pooh, “that’s why he never understands anything”.
