The Q4 Lock-in: You don't need to finish everything, just what matters

Updated: Oct 3
It’s October. What the heck?! Wasn’t it just January?
You may have started the year with a list of goals, resolutions and grand plans; and then, well, life happened. Am I right?
Some goals were achieved. Some were forgotten. Some stopped being relevant. And some are still sitting there, staring at you accusingly from the first page of a notebook somewhere.
And that's okay.
If you’re thinking that because it’s already October and you haven’t achieved everything you wanted to this year, that means you’ve failed, well, it doesn’t. It means you've arrived at another opportunity to decide what happens next.
You don't have to finish the year that you planned in January. Things change, and so have you.
We often treat our January goals like contracts we've signed with ourselves. But January-you didn't know everything that October-you knows. You've experienced things, changed your mind, grown, lost interest in some things, and discovered new priorities.
So now is in fact the perfect time to ask yourself:
What still matters to me?
What no longer matters?
What have I achieved that I forgot to celebrate?
What have I learned along the way?
And what do I genuinely want from the final three months of this year?
Remember, you’re allowed to update your plans as you go.
I need you to forget the idea of your “ultimate self”. We are all well aware that social media loves to push the idea of becoming your “best self”, but what does that actually mean?
Becoming the most successful possible? Well that’s subjective. The most efficiently productive? The healthiest? Most confident? Organised? Athletic? Most zen? It becomes yet another impossible, never-ending checklist.
Instead, aim to become a better version of yourself than before. Not perfect. Not complete. Just one step closer.
Sometimes that feels like progress. Sometimes it feels like slowing down. Sometimes it’s letting go of something that no longer serves you. Sometimes it’s finally starting something you’ve been putting off.
Instead of asking yourself what you can still achieve before the end of the year, try asking “what actually deserves my energy?” You don’t have to go through absolutely every aspect of your life. Let’s go for 1-3 priorities. Then ask yourself, “If I made meaningful progress on these three things by December, would I feel proud of myself?” If the answer is yes, then you've found your priorities.
Now the practical part.
Here’s how to break it down:
Choose your priorities. What matters the most to you?
Define what “better” looks like, or what “completed” will look like once you’ve achieved it. Be specific, but realistic. Remember, a ‘better’ you, not the ‘ultimate’ you.
Break each priority into small actions. What can you actually do this week?
Decide what you are NOT doing. This is just as important. Focus isn’t only about what you’re spending your energy on, it’s also deciding on what you’re not.
Schedule it. Put actions into your calendar so you’re not just relying solely on motivation. A goal without a plan remains a dream.
Check-in with yourself. What’s working? What isn’t? Adjust as you go along. There’s no shame in that.
One more thing: don’t confuse urgency with importance. Yes, three months can feel like a deadline, but ask yourself “Am I doing this because it matters to me, or because I feel like I should?” Remember, it isn’t about racing through your new year’s resolutions because once upon a time you said you would.
Finishing the year strong doesn’t mean that by the end of it you should feel exhausted, celebrating the fact that “you did it”, while needing another three weeks to recover. It’s about building good habits and a strong foundation for yourself that gets you one step closer to who you want to be. It means finishing the year knowing that you spent your energy on things that mattered to you.
You don't need to become your ultimate self before the year ends.
You don't need to achieve everything you wrote down in January.
You just need to decide what matters to you most, now.
Choose your priorities. Let go of the unnecessary. And take the next step.
Because progress isn't about becoming someone completely different. It's about becoming a little more yourself, one decision at a time.
So, this October, don't panic and don’t be so hard on yourself. Lock in. Not harder, but smarter. Not everything, just what matters.
You don’t have to seize the whole year. Just Seize the Daydream in front of you; one step at a time.
